Vg 6.0.2407, Dialogic, And Voip

I have been running a VG application for a few years now using V6.0.2407 and a Dialogic D/41EPCI card. It is plugged into a POTS line.

 

I am thinking of replacing that POTS line with a VOIP line. I have reviewed a number of Forum entries thinking I would confirm that this would not be a problem.... instead, I have become very confused.

 

I plug regular phones into my wall jacks which happen to terminate at some type of gizmo that interfaces between a VOIP Internet provider and my phones. My side of the device is supposed to behave just like POTS from the perspective of ringing, dial tone, etc. and that is why I can use my regular phones.

 

If the Dialogic card is expecting the line to behave just like POTS from the perspective of ringing, dial tone, etc., then shouldn't I expect it to work with a VOIP supported line? In my pea brain, I should be able to take the line from my regular phone and plug it into the Dialogic card and the VG application should work just like before. In fact, the main reason I was coming to the Forum was really just to see if the outbound calling feature had trouble discerning live vs answering machine pickups.

 

Instead I have found all kinds of posts about V7, configuring for VOIP with passwords, IP addresses, etc.

 

So... Will my setup, as described above, work if I just plug it directly into somebody's (Packet8, SunRocket if they were still in business, Vonage, Nuvio, etc) Interface Unit (Broadband Phone Gateway unit, Gizmo, Telecommunications Adaptor Unit, whatever...)? If not, what's the 10,000ft overview of why not?

Sounds like you will be using the VoIP-to-POTS converter. You just plug the cable from the Dialogic card into the unit supplied by the VoIP phone company, just like you would plug in a normal telephone. No need to setup ay IP's/passwords etc. The VoIP-to-POTS converter unit does all the login for you.

 

You only need to configure the VoIP passwords etc. in VoiceGuide if you do not use the converter using (and not using a Dialogic card) and you let the VoiceGuide communicate directly using VoIP protocol. This it not happening in your case as you are using VoIP-to-POTS converter (media gateway).

So, if I understand you correctly, using a VOIP-to-POTS converter unit means I don't need to mess with V7, configuring for VOIP with passwords, IP addresses, etc. So, I can switch to a VOIP line at any time without making any changes to my current configuration (Dialogic card, VG setup, and VG application). (I'm excited about not having to learn about a whole new dimension of telephony - VOIP!)

 

Okay, 2 questions:

 

1. Does using the VOIP-to-POTS converter unit affect (positively or negatively) the ability of the Dialogic card to detect an outbound call being answered by a live person or an answering machine?

 

2. Under what circumstances would I want to tell the VOIP provider to not send me their VOIP-to-POTS converter? (In my limited world/experience, the converter comes with the service...) I.E., perhaps my ability to do something extra (not supported by the converter) with VG negates the need?

Correct. The VoIP converter supplied by the VoIP Phone company will be setup to do all the account registration for you. You can use a normal POTS telephone with those adaptors - or just plug in a Dialogic card etc.

Yes. The Dialogic card will not even know that it's a POTS->VoIP adapter that you are attaching it to. As far as Dialogic is concerted it's just a POTS line and that’s all that matters to it. It does not care and does not need to know how the signal is afterwards routed.

The VoIP services provided by many VoIP phone companies does not provide as clear a connection as the established 'standard' phone companies. If the connection is of lower quality then the call answer detection reliability would be affected as well.

If you use a VoIP capable version of VoiceGuide and you know how to setup the VoIP registration. Sounds like in your case you should stick to using POTS converters.
