Mulaw And Tts

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

I downloaded VoiceGuide about a week ago to test it's features to see if it will meet our needs. It is working great except for one problem:

I am using a dilogic dialog/4 card and have converted/downloaded the Mulaw format sound files. Sound is working fine. I just added the microsoft TTS and the text to speech is working, but with a major flaw. It makes PCM files, not Mulaw. So I get errors when VoiceGuide trys to read the .wav file.

Is there a setting I am missing ?

I have 4 machines I want to convert over to VoiceGuide and they will need TTS. They all have the same dialogic dialog/4 cards so I really need to correct this.

Thank you in advance for your time

Just checked at it looks like at this stage it generating TTS in uLaw format is not supported - only the PCM will be generated. I'm also pretty sure that most TTS engines do not support generating of uLaw sound files directly.

Sounds like the only way to get this going would be to sue a Run Program module or VBScript module to run a command to create a TTS sound file in PCM and then run a conversion tool to convert from PCM to uLaw - and only then play the file... all this would incur some delays, and you would need to find the appropriate apps to do TTS generation and conversion.

(Also, we actually no longer even have any of the old Dialog/4 or D/41D cards to test with so it may be some time before support for uLaw TTS is added natively into VG... )

I did alot of research before I posted this problem and I was expecting the answer you gave me. I know that the Dialog/4 cards are very old, being ISA cards.

I am willing to loan you a dialog/4 card to see if some kind of driver or code change can make the TTS work. I would not hold you responcable for any damages etc... (I have 4 machines with 2 cards in each, I only need 4 ports per machine, so I can live without a card for a while.)

If you want to use the card for testing, we can take this to private email or phone and work out how we can get it to you. I do alot of custom work with databases and servers, so I know how important it is to have the hardware you need to test your software with.

Thank you again for your fast responce.

Thanks for the offer - we've had a chat around here and the consensus was that the quickest and easiest way to get the TTS going with the dialog/4 cards would be to use the approach as outlined in previous posting. I'd suggest finding some apps which can do the generation and the conversion and then just using these from within the script.

There are a number of project that we have here on our plate and at this stage we would not even have the time to look into adding support for these old cards...
