Sound Files

The format of sound files which are to be used depends on which version of VoiceGuide is used.

Versions 7.x Recommended: .WAV ULaw 8kHz 8-bit Mono, .WAV ALaw 8kHz 8-bit Mono.
Can also use: .WAV PCM: 8kHz, 11kHz, 16kHz, 22kHz, 44kHz, 32kHz and 48kHz.

On VoIP and ISDN systems it is recommended to use the same .WAV format as the VoIP/ISDN connection (ULAw or ALaw).
This way no transcoding will be done on the played file, and the trasnmitted sound data will be a byte-for-byte copy of the original sound file contents, giving the best possible sound playback quality.
Preferred sound file format (ULAw or ALaw) is selected at install time.

Versions 6.x .WAV : PCM 8kHz, 8-bit, Mono.
Can also use .VOX files: 8kHz, 4bit, ADPCM.
Versions 5.x .WAV : PCM 8kHz, 16-bit, Mono.
Note: When using VoiceGuide versions 5.x with Dialogic TAPI/WAVE drivers then the sound files must be recorded in the format used by the Dialogic Wave driver, which is .WAV PCM 11kHz, 8bit, Mono.

 

Sound Recording Software

One popular sound recording software is Audacity: https://www.audacityteam.org

eg: To save a recording as a WAV ULaw 8kHz 8-bit Mono file using Audacity:

  1. Start Audacity and open the sound file.
  2. If the file is stereo, convert to Mono using menu: Tracks > Mix > Mix Stereo Stereo Down to Mono.
  3. Set Project Rate Hz (bottom left) to 8000
  4. Select menu: File > Export > Export as WAV
  5. Choose "U-Law" Encoding.
  6. Edit the file name and be sure it ends in ".wav".
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click OK

 

System Sound Files

VoiceGuide comes with a number of pre-recorded system files which are installed in directory \system\voice\
The format of the sound files installed may depend on what options were selected during install.

An alternative system directory can be specified in the script by assigning the directory path to the DIRSYSTEMVOICE Result Variable.
Please see the Multilanguage section for more information on this.

The sound files say “Pound Key” to indicate the “#” key. Alternate copies of the sound files have been supplied if you would like VoiceGuide to use “Hash Key” to indicate the “#” key. To use these files, just copy the alternate files over the system files used by VoiceGuide. The alternate files have "_HashKey" appended to their filename.

Files in \system\voice\ contain the following recordings:

 

0-23, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 These files contain the digit which corresponds to the name of the file.
